My Erotic Rationale

I was preparing a post to discuss my reason for making my romance fiction erotic when I stumbled upon a Substack post by an author and poet named Christopher Sexton. I only found his Substack site by accident and I'm glad I did because he beautifully expressed in a poem my sentiments toward using erotic language in my storytelling. Even the comments reflected the appreciation of his followers for his ability to voice the natural beauty of physical love. He gave me permission to share the poem here and a link to it in Substack as well.
While describing my sex scenes between Will and Chris, I could have stopped at language that merely hinted or suggested what was happening. You know-- "he entered her" and "she thrilled at his fullness". Huh? If you bought something that needed to be assembled, would you like the instructions to be nothing more than "put the pieces together"? Wouldn't you like to know what tools to use and what to screw where? By the same token, I want to tell my readers exactly what Will and Chris are doing to each other that is so seductive and arousing that they can't avoid reaching sexual climax.
After all, Will is a former midnight cowboy. He has an arsenal of tricks to employ to bring his partner to ecstasy. Why should I not tell you what they are? And it's important as well to know that (and how) he has created a heterosexual monster in a man-shy lesbian.
Besides, I find all that circuitous language of writers who don't want to offend their readers' delicate sensibilities very boring. Moreover, and more importantly, the sexual act in my novels is more than just a sexual act. Strangers do it. Hookers and johns do it. Once I asked my (ex) husband what intimacy was. His response was, "Swapping body fluids." Really? I instantly felt like a prostitute.
I share with Christopher Sexton the feeling that physical love between two people who adore each other is much more than this. It is sacred. It is divine. It expresses the sublimity of the spiritual and emotional connection between a pair of otherwise separate individuals through their God-given bodies. It expresses their love for each other on the highest and purest level.
And I can't deliver less in my novels than The Full Monty on Will and Chris's behalf. I think Chris Sexton would understand. Here's a portion of his poem.
"sex is cool but have you ever
had one woman
become every element?
earth when she holds you,
fire when she rides,
air when she moans,
water when she cries
into your chest;
and you
stay long enough
to become fluent
in them all?
call it outdated,
but I'm the kind of man
who wants to grow old
wrinkled beside the woman
whose moans taught me
how to pray again.
loyalty is the sexiest rebellion on earth.
divine union isn't about possession.
it's about obsession
with the sacredness of
staying through the storm
and making love in the rubble.
devotion is my favorite form of dirty talk.
nothing gets me harder
than the soft power of a woman
who knows she's the only one."
